The Herbert Johnson Poet fedora is the hat widely identified with Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, developed with costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis by the London hatter Herbert Johnson, founded in 1889. For the film, the Poet was made in rabbit fur felt and customized with a tall, straight-sided open crown, wide brim, dark brown grosgrain galloon ribbon-band, leather sweatband, and a Raiders-specific brim shape with a 38mm ribbon. On screen it appears in a dark brown, sable-brown finish with the high-crowned, broad-brimmed profile that distinguishes the first-film Indiana Jones hat from later series variations. Herbert Johnson is a long-established British hatmaker that later held a Royal Warrant.
