The canary-yellow halter dress worn by Mia Dolan was custom-designed for La La Land by costume designer Mary Zophres. Contemporary coverage of the production notes that Mia’s brightly colored dresses were bespoke pieces made for Emma Stone, and this poster dress is described as a sleeveless halter-style design with a flowing pleated skirt, created to move fluidly during dance. The garment features subtle hand-painted pattern detail, including a floral-inspired print attributed to ager-dyer Rob Phillips and said to be influenced by Matisse. Zophres sourced the polyester fabric locally and shaped the dress around classic Hollywood silhouettes while accommodating extensive movement for the film’s choreography.
